Brighton has long been a bubbling hub of psychedelia, and we’re delighted share with you another brilliant band from the Sussex seaside city’s ever-expanding music scene. Introducing jangle-psych quartet, Hutch.
Originally beginning life as the soundtrack project for their own Mighty Boosh-inspired cartoon, Mark Monsoon and the Children of the Sky, Jack Pritchard (vocals and guitar), Dan Shepherd (vocals and guitar), Charlie Bogg (vocals and bass), Owen Bullock (vocals and drums),swapped their cartoon soundtrack to work on their upcoming debut release. That’s not to say they left their childlike wonder at the door completely!
Channeling 60s Toytown psychedelia and 80s jangle-pop, Hutch craft a joyous technicolour explosion of hip-shaking psych-pop and surreal lyricism on par with Aussie psychlords the Babe Rainbow and King Gizzard. So far they have garnered support slots with legendary psych bands Love and Os Mutantes, as well as a host of festival appearances.

Hutch’s highly-anticipated debut EP Smile and Wave is due for release 23rd February. Ahead of this they will be releasing single ‘Ice on the Lake’ on the 18th January (fitting considering the UK’s current Arctic chill), which draws inspiration from a real-life failed attempt to “break the ice” while on tour in Bedford, as the band themselves explain:
Written about a journey Hutch took to a frozen lake last winter. We took a stone from what we’re 75% sure was Hugh Laurie’s house and tried many times to break the frozen lake with rocks, sticks and anything else we could find – to no avail. The song reflects the intrigue and wonder of a captivating snowy scene. In a way it appeals to the childlike excitement of the snow and seeing a place you’re quite used to, being temporarily changed.
Pre-save ‘Ice on the Lake’ here.
The band will embark on 14-date UK headline tour this spring, starting in February.
