Easy FM is the latest release from Premium Leisure, the brainchild of Willie J Healey guitarist Chris Barker. Overflowing with good vibrations designed to soothe restless souls this 4 track EP brims with the optimism of balmy summer evenings and cloudless skies while generously sharing with the listener a feel-good factor so sorely missing over the past few turbulent months.
In collaboration with some of Oxford’s finest musical talents including drummer Mike Monaghan [Gaz Coombes, Saint Etienne], bassist Harry Deacon [Palace, Razorlight], Ash Cooke [Be Good], Casper Miles & Jack Kendrew [PETSEMATARY] and Willie J Healey himself, Barker has created a unique soundscape incorporating up tempo beats, reverberating riffs and easy on the ear lyrics which combine to produce an infectious groove guaranteed to elevate the mood of long-time fans and casual listeners alike.
Opening the EP with its persuasive rhythm and catchy hook ‘Remedies’ encourages the listener to ‘do whatever makes you feel good’ as its aura of sweet innocence draws us into a world where everyday worries are left far behind. Barker’s lyrics complement the uplifting instrumentation in urging us to do more of what makes us happy and not to accept a life of unfulfillment.
In a similar vein, ‘Ready For Forever’ has an indie-lounge feel reminiscent of Mac DeMarco and psychedelic elements of Perth rockers Pond as its breezy psych-pop sound romanticises easy living and invites us all not to take the world too seriously.
‘Easy FM’ is replete with chiming guitar and just a sprinkle of fuzz to embellish the track’s positive summer vibe. The addition of layered harmonies and insistent hi-hat creates a tone and feel which Kevin Parker would undoubtedly be proud of.
Barker describes final track ‘The Opener’ as “like a child having a field day in a toy shop, having a go on all the toys that feature a ‘try me’ function.” Benefitting from a relaxed groove throughout, Barker’s inherent ability to have fun while experimenting with a song’s sound and texture shines through. His mantra to simply ‘live and let live’ is perfectly reflected as the listener is carried along on a gentle tide that transports us to a place where the sun never sets.
