Detroit’s three graces Shadow Show have come a long way since they debuted in 2018, blowing us away with their recent sophomore album, Fantasy Now!. A hypnotic sleeve shows the power-trio in Paco Rabanne style metal dresses, a nod to Francoise Hardy’s iconic 60s dress. Psychedelic and truly timeless.

Beyond their picturesque presence, Kate Derringer, Kerrigan Pearce and Ava East have leveled up their game to craft a lush and beguiling mosaic of sounds. The title track “Fantasy” sets the bar high with a powerful overflow of harmonies that instantly capture the listener.  Aptly named, Fantasy Now! is deeply rooted in a dreamlike realm, gradually lurking more and more  on the occult side, whilst remaining empoweringly life-affirming. It feels like mermaids are luring you to a paradise island and shangri-la ruled by nymphs, goddesses and riot grrrls alike.

Second track “Vertigo” is a tidal wave that catches you off guard, goes fully electric and kicks out the jams. A proper witches brew for your listening pleasure, which appears to fly to and fro another dimension, whilst adorned by heavenly voices all the way through. “Illusions” covers its tracks with a meditative tune which unfolds as another kind of incantation, a love letter to nature and the elements. There is magic underlying at every corner. “Fell Into a Spell” echoes “Vertigo”, combining the versatile power of the divine feminine and heralding a cosmic energy, cranking up the volume. This is a turning point that makes all the other tunes fit into each other, summoning otherworldly spirits. What’s a witch without her coven?

“Still a Day” encompasses some of the best vocals on the record and is a sonic manifestation of collective power and of being unabashedly aware of the latter. The introspective “Wizard’s Harp” is no lull, it is a goosebumps inducing, yet thoughtful lullaby and another reminder of imperium in its many forms, something you may find looking within. Like a rollercoaster, “Don’t Make Sense” follows suit but does so as loud as can be.

The final track “On a Cloud” oozes serenity and closes the record with a sense of victory, all that has been uttered and manifested is solid and paramount. Join the dots, you are the master of your own path and destiny.

Fantasy Now! Was released February 16th 2024 via Stolen Body Records.
